Astronaut Trading Cards Lesson Plan

Grade Level: K-4 grades

Curriculum Area: Language Arts and Social Studies

Lesson Objectives:

  • ELA-1-E1 gaining meaning from print and building vocabulary using a full range of strategies (1, 4)
  • ELA-1-E7 reading with fluency for various purposes (e.g., enjoying, learning, problem solving) (1, 2, 4)
  • ELA-2-E4 using narration, description, exposition, and persuasion to develop compositions (e.g., notes, stories, letters, poems, logs); (1, 4)
  • ELA-4-E2 giving and following directions/procedures; (1, 4)
  • ELA-4-E4 giving rehearsed and unrehearsed presentations; (1, 4)
  • ELA-5-E4 using available technology to produce, revise, and publish a variety of works; (1, 3, 4)
  • H-1A-E3 identifying and using primary and secondary historical sources to learn about the past; (1, 3, 4)

Technology Performance Indicators:
Use technology tools (e.g., publishing, multimedia tools, and word processing software) for individual and for simple collaborative writing, communication, and publishing activities for a variety of audiences. (1,3)

Procedures:
1. The teacher will bookmark the website for the links to the astronauts.
2. There are 18 astronauts who landed on the moon. Assign an astronaut to each student.

3. If students do not know how to save pictures from the Internet, do a whole group lesson. (Use this handout)
4. Students will access the web site for the link to the assigned astronaut.
5. Using the planning sheet, the student will make notes and download the picture into an assigned folder.
6. The students will then use a word processor and the trading card template (how to insert ahandout) for creating their trading card. (Sample of finished trading card)
7. Each student will take a turn sharing his or her card with the class.
8. Assess student work using a rubric. (See our sample)
