Ask an Astronaut Question Lesson
Plan
Grade Level: K-4 grades
Curriculum Area: Science
Lesson Objectives:
- SI-E-B1 categorizing questions into what is known, what is
not known, and what questions need to be explained; (2, 4)
- ESS-E-B6 understanding that knowledge of the Earth as well
as of the universe is gained through space exploration. (1)
Technology Performance Indicators:
Gather information and communicate with other using telecommunications
(e.g., email, video conference, internet) with support from
teachers, family members, or peers. (1,4,5,6); Use technology
resources to assist in problem-solving, self-directed learning,
and extended learning activities. (2,4)

Assessment: Questions: Already
answered, what want to know, what will ask.
Procedures:
- Before the lessons the teacher will bookmark the "Ask
a Member of the ISS Crew" website http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/feedback/expert/
on each computer to be used.
- Have the students read what questions have already
been asked from the archives.
- The students and teacher will then categorize what
is already known (each student should be able to give a question which has
already been asked and answered), what they would like to know, and then what questions could
they ask. (Inspiration can be used if available or use the handout).
- Together the class will formulate questions for the astronaut
being featured.
- The teacher will assign students to input the questions
on the website and then monitor the site for an answer.
- Assess student work with a rubric. (See
our sample)
